Dear Friend,
With fall here and everyone headed back to school, we are celebrating the educational achievements of our girls and young women!

At our recent Educational Initiative award ceremony, we recognized 17 new members in the program, 4 graduates from the pilot program GED for MOMS, and three high school & GED graduates! Two members completed the New York State Certified Nurse-Aid Training, one member earned a Security Guard Certificate, and 15 members successfully completed the spring 2012 semester. We also awarded five scholarships, generously funded by V-Day. I am so proud of each one of our girls and young women who are making significant strides toward their educational and career goals!

I am gearing up a busy fall and I hope you’ll join us at our upcoming Girls Like Us Benefit Event and Celebrity Reading! The event takes place this October 17th at El Museo Del Barrio, and will include an evening of theatre performances featuring celebrity readings of Girls Like Us, featuring Jada Pinkett Smith, and 100% of the evening’s proceeds go to GEMS! Buy your tickets here.

Thank you, as always, for your support! We could not do this work without you. Rachel Lloyd Picture

Sincerely,

GEMS Training in NYS!

GEMS hosted a training event in NYC from September 17-19th at Columbia law school for out-of-town service providers and advocates! The nationally recognized Train-the-Trainer course provided attendees with a strong knowledge base of the commercial sex industry in America and the best practices on serving youth who are at risk for, or have experienced, commercial sexual exploitation (CSE).

Highlights & Happenings

Diamond of the Month

We’re so proud to announce that Simone is our Diamond of the Month! Dedicated to her education, and significantly improving her reading skills, she is focused and determined! Although extremely self-motivated, Simone is also giving and supportive to other members every day.

We’ve often seen her encouraging members, explaining various GEMS policies and procedures to new members, accompanying members places, as well as giving advice and checking in with girls who seem shy or who just look like they need cheering up. She is an inspiration to GEMS’ members and staff!

OVCMember Highlights

Achievements There were so many employment accomplishments to celebrate this
past summer! We had members who attained employment through various programs such as Summer Youth Employment Program, Youth Adult Internship Program, and the Green Applied Parks Project program. Other members found jobs within the retail, collegiate, hospitality, and social service industries.

Three members from the Transitional Independent Living program are starting college, and one member from the house is currently working as a CNA.

In addition, two members are beginning college, four are finishing their GEDs, and many more members are continuing college at various schools such as Marymount College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and Borough of Manhattan Community College to name a few.

OVCNew Groups for Members

Handcirlce This fall, our members are engaging in a number of exciting new groups! The GEMS Literary Lab is helping members develop their writing skills.

Duane Morris law firm is continuing to run a Legal Lab, which provides members with an understanding of the legal system, and a new parenting group is supporting new mothers! There will also be a craft group with a sculptor from NYU. GEMS’ members are really looking forward to participating in these new groups!

OVCCareer Week
creativecareersweekCareer Week was a huge hit! During the last week of August, GEMS members met with professionals from the fields of healthcare, law enforcement, social services, and fashion & art. Each day brought an opportunity for our members to learn about careers in these specific fields and talk to professionals!
